OVERVIEW

Nevado Mateo 5150M

A perfect summit to begin our expedition. In just one day we will climb through moraines, glaciers to reach the summit. The climb is non-technical in nature giving us perfect acclimatisation or an entry-level peak to climb in the Cordillera Blanca. From the summit, you are treated with magnificent surrounding views of Chacraraju, Chopicalqui, Contra hiervas, Huascaran, Hualcan, and Ulta peaks.

Nevada Ishinca 5530M

Ishinca 5530M is one of the most beautiful and interesting peaks to climb in the Ancash region. Ishinca can be used as a climbing objective or acclimatization peak before climbing other 6000M peaks in the region. Excellent peak to climb for skilled mountaineers and can also be used as a training peak. Gradual climbing is recommended with a base camp set up and is suitable for climbers seeking less technical routes.

There are two standard routes that can be climbed. Depending on weather and snow condition our guides will strategically choose the best route giving us a higher chance of summit.

Tocllaraju 6032M

Tocllaraju is a beautiful mountain that dominates the view in the Ishinca valley. Shaped like a beautiful pyramid, Tocllaraju 6032M is one of the challenging peaks to climb located in the central-southern part of the Cordillera Blanca. Toqllaraju, means "trampa-nevado" in the local Quechua language ("trap mountain" in English), meaning probably “snowy mountain that catches", that is it captures and hypnotizes because of its great beauty.

We will climb via the standard route, the North-West Ridge to the summit. The most technical part of this peak is the overcoming of the bergschrund at the base of the summit mushroom and the slope above it, which can be graded at AD/D- depending on the conditions of the crevasse and ice section in the same area. On the ridge and final climb to the summit, we will have to use ice climbing techniques to climb to the summit.

When is the best time to plan for Nevado Mateo, Nevado Ishincha and Tocllaraju climb? . . .

June - September is the best time to climb most of the peaks in Peru.

Which route will Namas team choose? I can see the mountain is very steep and exposed, What is your climbing strategy? . . .

Nevado Mateo - East Standard route. F+ grade. We will be using Mateo as our acclimatisation climb.

Nevado Ishnica - North West slope route to South West ridge. PD+ grade. Ishnica climb is to build your skills and confidence.

Tocllaraju - North West Ridge. AD+ grade. Expect a long hard climb which will test you mentally and physically.

All the mountain have steep section. Ishincha and Tocllaraju have more creavasee objective dangers. We will set up base camp for Ishincha and Tocllaraju.

How long is a typical climbing day on the mountain? . . .

On normal climbing day can expect an average of 6 hours climb. Summit attempt days are usually the longest one (10 -12 hours), as we have to descend down to base camp.

What is summit day like? . . .

Summit day in Nevado Mateo and Inishca is the straightforward climb up to the summit with few crevasse openings and steep sections along the way, which poses minimal risk.

Tocllaraju is the most challenging of all making it a long climb testing climbers mentally and physically.

We will be mostly climbing through ice and snow terrains and will be a early day (am) start to the summit.

Contingency Days? . . .

We do not have contingency day added in our itinerary but can be extended upon request if our team is not able to summit due to bad weather conditions.

Suggested Additional Summit tips $300.

Is Three peak suitable for beginner climbers and what level of fitness do I need? . . .

Nevado Mateo and Ishinca is suitable for beginner to intermediate level climbers. The peak itself is a non to less technical and high altitude trek/climbing mountain. To reach their summits you do not need any special climbing skills such as climbing on ropes using gears or use of ice axe. Mateo and Ishinca are a very popular destination for clients with little or no mountaineering experience. The mountain has less to non-technical challenges, there are small opening crevasses during the climb but apart from that, the climb is straight forward. All climbers are recommended to partake in preparative fitness training 3 to 4 months before the departure date. You should be able to carry 5-8 kgs of your bag pack, walk up and downhill every day for 15/16 days and be able to push yourself during the summit climb.

Tocllaraju required more experienced level climbers with good knowledge of technical skills. Graded at AD+ expect a long steep and ice climbing section near the summit ridge.

Physically Tocllaraju will be demanding. That is why we highly suggest you train well over 3 to 4 months before your trip. You will need good endurance and body strength. Aerobic exercises mixing with overall body strength building routines should help you prepare physically for your trip. Another aspect is your mental strength. We would say any mountaineering experience is more about testing your mental strength, to push forward and take on the challenge of completing a great adventure and being exposed to new uncomfortable environments.

How do I know this is the right trip for me? . . .

This expedition combines the best of non to semi-technical climbing route. If you have previous experiences of climbing technical routes in the mountains this mountaineering adventure really depends on your ambition to go on a great challenging climbing adventure. Be prepared for a long tough day on when climbing Tocllaraju.

To help you clarify if this is the right peak climbing adventure for you, [our grading][1] system can help you determine if this is the right expedition and if it is the right time to take upon trips of such nature. What fitness/conditioning level is needed for this climb? . . .

You need to be in excellent shape for this climb. Although clients are supported by local guides and ropes, due to the technical nature of the peak, it is critical that you are in the best shape possible. Especially the final Summmit Tocllaraju will demand a lot of strength and endurance fitness mentally and physically.

Technical preparation and trainings for Ishinca and Tocllaraju? . . .

Ice climbing (intermediate level), ascending on fixed rope, abseiling, traversing and scrambing skills are required.

How hard is it to climb to the summit of Mateo, Ishnica and Tocllaraju? . . .

Mateo is the easiest of the three. It is a straight forward climb to the summit. Ishnica is graded at PD+ alpine grade and Tocllaraju AD+. When it comes to expedition the more fitter you are and more stronger the better your chances of successfully climbing to the summit and most of all enjoying the expedition. Summiting all the peak mostly depends on the weather condition and your fitness level. The climb normally starts around 3/4 am in the morning and it is about 3-4 hours climb to the summit.

Physical fitness needed for Peru Three Peak expedition? . . .

You need to be in a great shape for this climb. Due to the non technical and strenous nature of the Tocllaraju, it is very important that you are in the best shape possible. Also, as Porter support is moderate on this climb, you are expected to be able to carry all of your personal gear needed for the climb. Sherpa teams are primarily responsible for carrying group gears to the camps.

Which Mountain can I aim for after Peru Three Peak expedition thats above 6000M? . . .

Once you succecssfuly finish this expedition you can start to look ahead into Nepal (Himalayas) for higher expedition. Mera Peak, Island Peak and Lobuche east peak climbing are great peak climbing adventures to plan. These are morderate to semi-technical climbing peaks in the Himalayas.

Our main suggestion is take it one step at a time. The lure of climbing high mountains is there but taking small steps, gaining right experience and understanding your physiology is very crucial for climbing extreme high mountains. Amadablam 6810M, Baruntse Peak 7129M, Manaslu 8163M, Tilicho Peak 7134M are some of the 7000M+ - 8000M+ Peak expedition we organise at Namas adventure.

All our guides carry extensive medical kits including various medications for altitude illness. If you have a previous history of altitude illness then please discuss this with us and your physician, otherwise there is no need to take preventative medication before or during your expedition.

You need to bring any medications you regularly use (don’t forget to tell us about them), plus extras. Also bring a small first aid kit including a blister kit and mild headache medication for the normal altitude headaches.

While on trek, tea houses will also have power available with with Asian plugs (needed) and offer recharging for a fee.

What is the best equipment for photography in alpine environments? . . .

As camera technology is changing and getting smaller and better, we recommed light and durable cameras for photography. If you are a serious photographer then you will have your preferences on camera gears but just for enthusiast to record and document your memory mirrorless cameras from SONY, Cannon and small action camera like gopro or insta 360 are recommended. Drone is gaining its popularity but please ask us information for drone use rules and regulation. For safety reason Nepal is very stict with drone use and we do not want it to be a hassle during our expedition days.
