Overview

Ama Dablam 6812M is renowned as one of the most beautiful and exposed Himalayan mountains in the Everest region. It is a highly sought-after mountain for climbing enthusiasts. Whether you plan to tackle it before or after a bigger expedition like Everest, Ama Dablam is a mountaineering challenge on its own. Many alpinists and mountaineers consider a climb of Ama Dablam to be a "must-do" experience.

Two or more 6,000M ascents and multi-pitch climbing experience are required: Lobuche East and Island Peak, Chulu West, Khumbu 3 Peak expeditions, Cholatse, Aconcagua, Mont Blanc (or comparable 4,000M to 6,000M peaks and above), along with multi-pitch climbing on rock or ice at a grade of 5.9 to 5.10 a, b, c.

History: Ama Dablam was first summited on 13th March 1961, a Silver hut scientific expedition led by Sir Edmund Hillary. Ama Dablam's expedition has been a dream for many mountaineers. Its Southwest ridgeline is the safest route to climb this amazing peak.

    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

SKILLS REQUIRED . . .

Amadablam is a climbers mountain. You will need exceptional physical fitness and climbing skills. Clients should be able to take care of themselves during climbing days. Eating well, staying hydrated from the start of the expedition, making sure your gears are in check and functional during the climb should be your second nature. Your Sherpa expedition leader will guide and motivate you throughout but a lot of the effort lies within you and your ability to climb. We suggest certain skills especially for Amadablam style expeditions.

  • Rock climbing indoors and outdoors - (i) learn the basics of wearing harness and helmets (ii) tying figure 8 knot and stopper knot (iii) basics of using belaying device correctly (iv) Use ascending and descending devices (iv) basics of using ropes , start/end when climbing (v) learning knowledge of moving while using the gears and being checking the safety features simultaneously.
  • The more experience you have on rock climbing, taking on tougher routes in different types of rock, the better it is for you to get familiar with climbing style and adjusting during the expeditions.
  • Abseiling: Abseiling is an essential and foundational mountaineering skill on this route. Multi-pitch abseiling knowledge and prior experience are also required.
  • Climbing Across Varied Terrain: Proficiency in climbing across varied terrain is required, including slab rock, vertical face climbing, and steep scrambling.
  • Crampons and Ice Axe Technique: Competent use of crampons and ice axes is mandatory. Winter ice climbing or formal mountaineering courses are strongly recommended. Climbers must be able to kick-step and maintain balance on icy slopes, execute ice axe arrests in the event of a slip or fall, and move confidently while descending and abseiling with crampons on all terrain types.
  • Climbing at Altitude: Prior high-altitude climbing experience is required. Island Peak serves as a key acclimatisation and training ascent within the programme. Previous high-altitude experience provides essential insight into how the body responds at elevation. Clients are responsible for arriving in peak physical condition.

All itineraries are structured to support thorough acclimatisation. Consistent attention to nutrition and hydration throughout the expedition is equally importan

What’s the best season to summit Ama Dablam?

April - May

October - November

What’s the route NAMAS team chooses to climb Ama Dablam and what’s the strategy employed for the climb?

Yes, Ama Dablam is more technical than most of the other climbs that we do. Above Camp 1, you and the climbing team will use ropes to conquer the technical terrain. We are often 'clipped in' while moving around Camp 2! The route taken for the climb lays in the Southwest Ridge and is the standard route. We also offer a trip that ascends the highly technical North Ridge of Ama Dablam. Please contact our office for further information on this route.

How long is a typical day on the mountain during ascent days?

Time duration and distance varies from camp to camp, but on normal climbing day can expect an average of 6 hours climb. Summit attempt days are usually the longest one, as we have to descend down to our chosen camp. (Camp 1 or 2 depending on our overall progress)

How does the summit day feel?

Summit day on Ama dablam Mountain is the most straightforward day of the whole climb!. If we choose to climb from Camp 2 then expect a 12+ hours back and forth climb but if our Sherpa team decides it is safe to set up camp 2.9 then summit to camp 2 should be an approx of 10 hours climb. This is the only day when you’ll be climbing on snowy and glacial route with no rock slabs.

Are there contingency days during Ama Dablam ascent?

We have included a 14 days block for contingency during climbing/summit days. During clear weather window the climb from base camp to summit can be achieved under 7 to 8 days. For stormy and unclear weather conditions the itinerary already includes contingency to help complete the summit if the things do not go as planned.

Who are the guides and Sherpas? What are their qualifications and level of English?

Each expedition accommodates a maximum of 8 climbers, led by a single IFMGA or NMA certified head guide as the primary expedition leader. IFMGA-certified western guides are available upon request at an additional cost. Nepalese IFMGA certified guides demonstrate exceptional capability and command excellent English, fully in line with the highest international standards. Namas is committed to responsible tourism and advancing the careers of local Nepalese mountain leaders. Western guide arrangements remain available for clients who prefer this.

The standard Sherpa ratio is 1:2, with all Sherpas trained and certified through the NMA Khumbu Climbing Centre. A dedicated 1:1 personal Sherpa can be arranged at an additional cost. Sherpas hold a strong working proficiency in English and communicate, instruct, and respond with confidence in the field.

How much should I tip guides and the porter team? Can I know more about the summit tips?

Most clients provide gratuities at the close of the trek or climb. A tip pool of USD 500 is included in the booking fee and distributed fairly among drivers, assistant guides, and porters.

Many clients also donate trekking equipment such as jackets, trekking poles, gloves, or hats to porters, which is warmly received. Treating the porter team to a dinner on the final trekking day is another thoughtful gesture that is greatly appreciated.

Suggested additional summit gratuity: USD 300.

What skills and prior experience are required for this climb in Ama Dablam mountain?

Climbers must be fully confident with ropes, ice axes, crampons, and Jumars. Although fixed lines run to the summit, the ability to climb steep rock and glacial faces while carrying a loaded backpack is essential. Prior high-altitude mountaineering experience is a mandatory requirement, and candidates need to be capable of alpine AD grade routes. Contact the team for a personal assessment of your experience level before applying

Is a private expedition possible?

What level of fitness and conditioning is required?

Clients must arrive in exceptional physical condition for the Ama Dablam climb. The technical route of the Ama Dablam makes peak fitness an absolute requirement, regardless of the Sherpa and rope support available. Sherpa assistance on this route is moderate, and climbers are expected to carry all personal gear throughout. The Sherpa team focuses on transporting shared group equipment between camps after rope setups.

What technical preparation and training is recommended for joining the Ama Dablam summit?

  • Regular bouldering and rope climbing sessions at a local climbing centre.
  • A consistent commitment to endurance and strength conditioning.
  • A foundational ice climbing course to build proficiency with ropes, ice axe, and crampons, and to develop an understanding of the physical demands at altitude.
  • At least one summit between 4,000M and 6,500M to assess high-altitude adaptability and technical performance on steep terrain.

How heavy will my backpack be on the mountain?

Personal equipment is progressively moved up the mountain during acclimatisation rotations and stored securely in individual tents at each camp by Sherpas. This systematic approach reduces overall pack weight, with typical loads ranging from 18 to 25 kilograms (40 to 55 pounds).

How should I train for this expedition?

Namas has published a dedicated mountaineering training blog that provides practical guidance on training duration, methods, and the specific conditioning required to prepare thoroughly for a demanding high-altitude expedition.

What physical fitness is needed for Ama Dablam?

Peak physical condition is quintessential for this climb. The technical route of Ama Dablam demands the highest possible level of personal fitness. Since the Sherpa support on this route is very moderate, all climbers are expected to carry their full personal equipment load. The Sherpa team focuses on transporting shared group gear between camps.

What hotels do we stay at in Kathmandu?

All Namas expedition guests are accommodated at Hotel Manaslu or Hotel Tibet in Kathmandu on arrival, and at Dwarika's Hotel on departure. The arrival hotels are a short 15-minute walk from the cultural heart of Thamel and offer easy access to a swimming pool, restaurants, a spa, massage facilities, and local shops for those seeking souvenirs.

Are lodges on the approach trek good? Can I book a single room in teahouses?

All trekking accommodation is in authentic local Sherpa tea houses. The cultural warmth of these lodges is a highlight of the journey. Every lodge selected by Namas is among the best available in each village, maintained to a clean and well-kept standard. Our team has established long-term relationships with the lodge owners to make your stay cozy and comfortable. Yes, Private rooms are available at additional cost but standard bookings are based on shared rooms, typically twin and occasionally triple occupancy. On the mountain during climb, clients share a tent with one or occasionally two fellow climbers.

A private base camp tent can be arranged for the expedition period with advance notice to allow the team to make necessary preparations for you.

Are showers and laundry available during the expedition?

Tea houses on the trekking approach offer hot showers and laundry services for an additional nominal fee.

Is food included in the expedition fee?

All Namas expeditions are fully inclusive of meals, breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided throughout all trekking and expedition days, along with plentiful hot and cold beverages. On camping days, both freshly cooked and pre-packaged food supplies are prepared. Freshly cooked meals are only available in lower camps in the mountain.

The camp menu options are more focused by necessity. Cooked staples include rice, lentils, vegetables, and pasta, complemented by a selection of freeze-dried meals, energy bars, chocolate, biscuits, and hydration supplements. A varied range of expedition-grade freeze-dried options including chicken, vegetable, and spaghetti varieties is stocked for the climbing days

What is the best way to reach Nepal?

Most international flights arrive into Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu with limited flights to Gautam Buddha International Airport in Bhairawa. Regular scheduled flights connect Kathmandu through major connecting airports like Bangkok, Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, Hong Kong, Singapore, and New Delhi.

Do I need a visa for entry into Nepal?

A visa is required for Nepal. However, ,ost nationalities can easily obtain a visa on arrival at Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport or at border entry points, or in advance through a Nepalese embassy or consulate abroad.

Do I need to arrive on Day 1? When should I book my return flight?

All expedition itineraries include a designated arrival and departure day. Clients should plan to arrive in the early hours of Day 1 as listed in the itinerary. Those wishing to arrive ahead of schedule are welcome to do so, as Kathmandu offers an exceptional range of cultural experiences. One or two-day tour suggestions are available upon request. A Namas Nepal representative will be at the airport to meet and transfer all arriving guests. The first team briefing will take place on the evening of Day 1. Flights should not be booked for departure before the final scheduled itinerary day. Full details of the trip and flight details are included in the pre-departure confirmation email after booking.

When should I book my flight tickets to Nepal?

Flights should be booked 60 to 90 days before the expedition start date to allow sufficient time to confirm that the trip has reached the minimum group size and will proceed. If a competitive fare is found earlier, please ensure the ticket permits date changes before purchasing, as booking a non-flexible fare carries the risk of financial loss in the event of a cancellation. In such cases, the team will make every effort to assist in finding a suitable alternative departure.

Can I find a cheaper flight online?

Affordable tickets can be found online, but flexibility on the return date is essential. The remote and high-altitude nature of these expeditions means that unforeseen circumstances can extend the itinerary by one or two days. Booking a fixed return flight without change provisions risks significant additional costs if the expedition timeline is extended.

Where do we meet? Will I be received at the airport?

A Namas guide or team representative will meet all arriving clients at Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport with a dedicated shuttle vehicle. For clients arriving before the scheduled expedition start date, advance notice to the team will ensure a timely airport transfer is arranged. Airport taxis are also readily available for solo travel to the hotel.

What if I arrive early or depart late?

The Namas team is happy to assist with arrangements or recommendations for clients wishing to explore more of Nepal before or after the expedition. Advance notice to either the main office or the in-country team will ensure a seamless extended stay.

Will you provide an equipment list specifically for the Ama Dablam Climb?

A comprehensive expedition documentation pack, including a detailed equipment list, is emailed to all clients after an enquiry confirmation. Any questions arising from the list can be directed to the team, who will readily assist with preparation, sourcing, and recommending suitable clothing and technical gear for the climb. All equipment lists are compiled in close consultation with the Sherpa climbing team.

Do I really need everything on the equipment list?

Yes, each and every item on the list has been carefully considered and serves a specific purpose on the mountain climbing. Thus, bringing the complete kit is essential.

What’s the amount of weight that I’ll carry during the climb?

Most expedition equipment will be rotated by the sherpa team but you’ll be carrying personal equipment of around 18-25 kg which translates to 40-55 pounds.

What’s the total number of kitchen staffing and porter logistics for this expedition?

The expedition logistics team includes one head chef with one to two kitchen assistants for groups of one to four climbers. The numbers of kitchen crew will be scaled to three to four kitchen staff for groups of five to eight as the team increases. Porter numbers are directly tied to the number of clients and their baggage. A 40 kg allowance per client is provided in the package. Each porter will carry up to 30 kg which means the porter team scales up proportionally with an increase in the overall baggage weight.

What tents are used on the Ama Dablam Expedition?

High-performance alpine three and four-season tents from Salewa, Mountain Hardwear, Samaya Equipment, and Kailas are used for the expedition. The standard configuration is a two-person tent per client team but solo climbers can also request a private tent, though a shared tent is recommended for warmth and companionships in the high altitude. The Sherpa will be responsible for all tent installation and camp setup. New tents, burners, and climbing equipment are brought into rotation on a regular basis for tackling the high altitude environments

What sleeping bag is recommended for climbing high mountains? Are extra blankets available?

A four-season goose-down sleeping bag rated to at least minus 40 degrees Celsius is the minimum standard for Ama Dablam summit. This is detailed clearly in the expedition gear list. Additionally, selecting a bag with sufficient internal space to wear additional insulating layers inside is recommended for the coldest nights on the mountain altitudes

What’s the weight that I’ll carry during the expedition?

From base camp onward, the Sherpa team transports all shared group equipment, food, and ropes. Each climber carries their full personal kit in the bag pack, which typically weighs between 18 and 25 kilograms (40 to 55 pounds).

Is supplemental oxygen provided and is it included in the expedition fee?
