Overview

Himlung Himal (7126 meters) is a classic Himalayan expedition known for being one of the lesser difficult and least technical 7000 meter+ mountains to climb (although it should not be underestimated). It has the highest recorded summit success rate (according to the Himalayan Database) compared to other peaks. Himlung Himal is also renowned as one of the safest climbable peaks with fewer technical difficulties. It is located in the same Himalayan belt as other giants like Manaslu and the Annapurna massif, so you can expect stunning views of the surrounding peaks from the summit.

The expedition begins with a trek through the Annapurna trail and deviates towards the remote and beautiful villages of Nar and Phu. All expedition teams set up their base camp at 4900 meters, which is located at the upper borders of Phu village. A safer route was pioneered around 2013 by Kari Kobler (Switzerland) and is relatively short with limited difficulty and objective danger. It shortcuts the previous route by ascending the south flank of the northwest ridge to reach its upper crest.

Pre-requisite requirements (5000M - 6000M minimum one or more): Mt. Elbrus (Europe) ,Kilimanjaro (Africa), Khumbu 3 Peak expedition (Nepal),Chulu West (Nepal),Lobuche East & Island Peak (Nepal), Aconcagua (South America), Mt, Blanc. (Europe) (Similar range 4000M to 6000M peaks or higher)

    "Himlung Himal Expedition October 2022”

I have a very high opinion of Namas and his team, they are highly recommendable. Namas is probably the company that provides the best info about its expeditions, and Bisesh has been extremely helpful in clarifying my endless doubts before the trip. He also helped me get in Katmandu some key pieces of equipment I was not able to buy back home.

Another key differential of Namas has been their 1:1 client: sherpa support. The 5-men sherpa team, under wise Kami Temba Sherpa´s leadership, has not only been extremely competent but also super kind and always with a smile on their faces. They were constantly taking care of us, I felt very safe under their supervision, and my special gratitude to Dawa "Annapurna" Sherpa ("my" sherpa). All went well during the more than three weeks of the expedition, even when the bad weather didn´t help.

I will surely come back to Himalaya or Karakorum with Namas."

Namas Himlung Himal Exped October 2022. Wow, what a trip. Really enjoyed it.

Bisesh always answered the never-ending pre-trip queries speedily and adequately. Suggestions were taken on board seriously and creatively. Lakpa's help in Kathmandu with equipment, hotel and transport was excellent.

The rental equipment was first class. I loved the Kailas sleeping bag, very warm and comfy. All equipment on the trip was good quality with a good size private tent for each at basecamp.

The smooth-running engine of the expedition was the 5-man sherpa team, headed by Kami Temba Sherpa. His English is excellent, he is a good communicator and organiser, insightful, and creative when bad weather seemed to put a spanner in the wheels at the start of the expedition.

We had 1:1 sherpa support and they were all great, with a smile on their faces, a good sense of humor, and unfailingly helpful! Without hesitation, I can highly recommend Namas.

    Himlung Himal 7126M Expedition (2022)

From the first email until the end of the expedition, Namas Adventure team was extremely helpful, flexible and easygoing. Every single question got answered before the trip (and there were many!) and replies were prompt. The Sherpa team was very professional and friendly and although they worked hard they did it with a smile on their face.

Rental gear was high quality, I was particularly happy with the sleeping bag. Very warm and comfy!

Everything was organized well and although we faced some delays and changes of plans due to bad weather, I felt like everything was under control and there was always at least plan b and c ready. I highly recommend Namas Adventure!

Kelly Swanson 🇺🇸 (2023 Himlung Himal)

I summited Himlung Himal with Namas in October 2023 and had an excellent experience. From the very start, the team was quick to answer all of my questions/concerns and gave me clear, detailed information on my queries. During the expedition, everything was well organized, with strong attention to climber safety and wellbeing as we gained altitude. The Base Camp was comfortable, and the food was good beyond expectation. The guides were friendly, experienced, and made every step of my climb enjoyable. I would join the delightful Namas team again for another expedition.

LLoyd Ellis 🇦🇺 (2023 Himlung Himal)

Namas is one of the top expedition companies in the Himalayas, for ascent in Nepal, India, and Pakistan. Communication was excellent, and the staff were hardworking and professional in my experience. The expedition was well managed from start to finish, and they got us to the summit and back safely while keeping the experience fun. I will return to Namas Adventure for my next mountain expedition

HIMLUNG HIMAL - Frequently Asked Questions

About the Mountain

  • Himlung Himal is a 7,126 m peak (23,379 ft) situated in the Peri Himal of western Nepal, within the Manang District of Gandaki Province, close to the Tibetan border

  • The best time to climb Himlung Himal is:

    • Autumn (Late Sept–October): Clear skies, stable weather, and safe climbing conditions. Most recommended.

  • We follow a slow and steady acclimatization trek through the stunning Nar-Phu Valley, allowing the body to gradually adapt to altitude before reaching Base Camp. After one key rotation climb to Camp 1, our summit strategy utilizes three high camps—Camp 1, Camp 2, and Camp 3—along the standard route to ensure a safe, staged ascent.

This approach minimizes risk, maximizes summit success, and gives climbers time to build strength, confidence, and rhythm on the mountain.

  • Himlung Himal is graded at

    Alpine / Fitness grading: AD / 4

You need to have a good to great level of endurance and strength fitness level required to climb extreme altitude mountains. Although Himlung Himal is classed as entry level 7000M, this expedition is not to be underestimated.

  • Summit day begins early midnight from camp 3 or 3in Himlung Himal. The climb itself is the straightforward climbing up the ridge leading upto the summit. We will be mostly climbing through ice and snow terrains and will be a early day (am) start to the summit and back to camp 1.

  • Himlung Himal is widely regarded as one of the safest 7000M peaks in the Himalayas, with minimal objective hazards such as avalanches or crevasses along the standard route.

Among all our 7000-meter expeditions, Himlung holds the highest summit success rate—making it an ideal choice for climbers seeking a well-managed, rewarding high-altitude experience with lower technical risk.

  • Himlung Himal (7,126m), is widely considered one of the safest 7000-meter peaks in the Himalayas. Compared to other peaks like Spantik in Pakistan or Lenin Peak in Kyrgyzstan/Tajikistan, Himlung offers significantly fewer objective dangers such as avalanches, crevasses, or unstable terrain. The standard climbing route is straightforward, with gradual slopes and well-established camps, making it ideal for entry-level 7000m climbers.

In contrast, Spantik presents more technical sections, rockfall zones, and steeper snow slopes, while Lenin Peak is known for its high avalanche risk, heavily crevassed glaciers, and volatile weather patterns, especially near Camp 3.

Rescue operations on Himlung are also more accessible, with helicopter evacuation possible from Base Camp—something not easily available on Spantik or Lenin. Thanks to stable weather in the post-monsoon season and a well-paced acclimatization strategy using Camp 1, Camp 2, and Camp 3, Himlung has one of the highest summit success rates among all 7000m peaks offered by Namas Adventure.

For climbers looking for a safe, structured, and rewarding high-altitude experience—particularly those preparing for 8000-meter climbs—Himlung Himal stands out as the most reliable and beginner-friendly option.

Experiences – Preparations – Team

  • Himlung Himal climb is a high-altitude expedition with relatively low technical difficulty but a physically demanding climb. The successful ascent of the Himlung mountain depends on your fitness, experience, and motivation. Our grading system helps you understand and know whether this expedition matches your current level for a 7,000-meter climb. If you are unsure if it’s the right call us. Contact our team who will review your experience with you and help you choose the right expedition for your skills and goals

  • This expedition is limited to a maximum of 8–10 climbers. The team is led by one main guide who is IFMGA or NMA certified and responsible for leading the expedition and overall decision-making.

We strongly believe that Nepalese IFMGA-certified guides are highly skilled, experienced, and fully capable of leading serious Himalayan expeditions. They have a strong working level of English and communicate clearly on the mountain. We are committed to responsible tourism and prioritize experienced local Nepalese leaders. If a client specifically requests a Western guide, this can be arranged at additional cost.

The Sherpa support is provided at a 1:1 ratio. All Sherpas are NMA-certified and trained at the Khumbu Climbing Center. They have a good working level of English and can clearly understand, communicate, and give instructions. A personal Sherpa dedicated solely to one climber can also be arranged, with additional charges applying.

  • The pre-requisite experience required for the expedition of Himlung Himal is an ascent of one or more than one mountain over 5000 to 6000 m. Lobuche East, Khumbu peak, and Island Peak in Nepal or Kilimanjaro and Mt. Elbrus in Africa or similar altitude mountains can be perfect beginner expeditions to complete for ascent of Himlung Himal.

  • You need to be in very good physical condition to go on this expedition. While the climb is supported by Sherpa Guides and the ropes fixed on the trail, the technical skills required are not for beginners. It means climbers need to be skilled and fit enough to move independently and handle long stays in the mountains. In addition, you need to be fit enough to carry your own gear because the Sherpa team carries climbing and group gears. Hence, you need to be healthy and fit to take this expedition

  • While it’s a beginner level mountain expedition, climbers need to have rope and wall climbing skills. Climbers are expected to carry their own gear hence skills with ropes, axes, bouldering and slope ascent is expected from you

  • Climbing

We recommend you to take on basic courses on climbing in your locality that offers:

    • Practice bouldering and rope work at your local gym

    • Take a basic ice climbing course to learn ice axe, crampon techniques, and rope skills.

    Fitness

Engage in an endurance and strength training routine to counter the challenges and weather in the high mountains.

  • We allow 40kgs of personal weight for this expedition.

Climbers are required to carry their personal climbing gear. If client require Sherpa guide to carry their personal gear additional Sherpa guide can be hired at additional cost USD 2500+

High camp tents and meals will be prepared by Sherpa guide members.

    • Mandatory summit bonus of USD 1000 for summit.

    • USD 700 for camp 3

    • USD 500 for camp 2

    • USD 350 for camp 1

  • No, higher camps and meals are prepare by Sherpa guide members. This is part of the service in Nepal.

  • During the trek, climbers and trekkers need to stay in local Sherpa guesthouses (tea houses). They're clean, comfortable, and give you a real taste of local culture. We use the best available lodges in each village, places we know well and trust.

Rooms are normally shared (twin or sometimes triple), but you can book a private room for an extra fee.

On the mountain, you'll share a tent with one or two other climbers. If you want your own tent at Base Camp, we can arrange that. Just let us know beforehand so we can plan accordingly

  • During the trek, the hot showers and laundry service are available for a small additional fee. At Base Camp in the high altitude, the team set up shower tents with hot water

  • During the trekking phase (in tea houses), meals are prepared fresh and mostly based on your choice from the lodge menu. Options range from the classic Nepali dish Dal Bhat (rice, lentils, vegetables) to familiar international meals such as pasta, soups, pizza, mashed potatoes, dumplings, and more.

During the camping phase, we shift to expedition-style meals. Our team provides a mix of freshly cooked food and pre-packed supplies brought from Kathmandu. Cooked options typically include rice, lentils, vegetables, and pasta. For convenience and nutrition at higher camps, we also include freeze-dried meals (chicken, vegetarian, spaghetti, etc.), chocolate and energy bars, biscuits, and hydration tablets. While variety is more limited during camping days, we ensure all meals are calorie-dense, hygienic, and designed for high-altitude performance.
