OVERVIEW

Baruntse Peak climbing is one of the best accessible peaks climb to achieve at the 7000M level. Mount Baruntse is located between Mount Everest (8848M), Lhotse (8516M), and Makalu (8463M) with other Himalayan peaks stretching on either side. This mountain offers a chance to gain valuable experience and skills that can be applied to higher peaks. Prior alpine/mountain climbing experience is required for this expedition, and we will carefully verify any such experience before accepting applicants. This is to ensure that all team members are well-equipped to handle the challenges of the climb.

Pre-requisite requirements (at least one or more): Lobuche East & Island Peak, Chulu West, Khumbu 3 Peak expeditions, Aconcagua (Similar semi-technical 6000M peaks or higher)

There is no denying the beauty of climbing this 7000M giant, but it is by no means an easy feat. With a difficulty rating of AD+, the climbing route includes technical climbs and glacier routes that will test your skills and endurance. Despite its challenges, this mountain will provide the necessary experience to prepare you for climbing 7500-8000 meter peaks in the future, should that be your goal. The South-East Ridge of Mount Baruntse is known for its steep sections of ice at 50 degrees and a prominent ice cliff around 7000 meters, making it a somewhat difficult climb. As a result, we recommend the more accessible and popular South Ridge to climb to the summit.

Our expedition to Mera and Baruntse was an amazing experience in every way, even when things didn’t go to plan. The itinerary was complex, taking us off the beaten path into some really remote country and attempting two different mountains. The Namas team organized it all flawlessly. They consistently hit the sweet spot between luxe and local, providing high-quality logistics while keeping things very Nepalese. And true to their ethical commitment, it was clear that they dealt fairly with the locals, who all seemed happy to be working with us.

On the trail Bisesh was a fine cultural guide and an easy traveling companion. Lead guide Noor was endlessly thoughtful and kind, as well as a super-solid technical leader with full IFMGA certification. Our basecamp cook was a master, and even our young porters we hope to see working up to guiding roles soon.

But while we were at altitude the pandemic was catching up to Nepal. Kathmandu was in lockdown, all international flights canceled. When an infection scare affected another team we had to break camp and change plans. The team proved very flexible and open in handling the uncertainty and delays that followed, as we waited it out in the mountains, then made a run for Kathmandu. Bisesh was critical in getting me out of the country, from working personal connections to secure seats on a charter flight, to lining up covid tests and the necessary paperwork.

Throughout these ups and downs Bisesh and the team were supportive, communicative, collaborative, and calm, as well as good company. I’d recommend them without hesitation, and personally I’m looking forward to returning soon for further adventures.

Baruntse and Mera Peak Expedition (2022)

    ️⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

The first Baruntse expedition in years to reach the top via the normal route.

It was a privilege to be part of this well-organized expedition. Base camp was very comfortable. Nice group of experienced, driven, and skilled Sherpa’s with countless 8000-meter climbs to their name. The attitude of founder Bishesh (for this occasion participant and expedition coordinator) was very casual, flexible, and pleasant. Would definitely recommend Namas.

    2024 Baruntse 7129M Expedition

    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Having just submitted Baruntse with NAMAS I have nothing but praise for the entire team. The expedition ran smoothly and effectively allowing me the best chance of summit success.

In preparation for the expedition Bisesh answered countless questions and provided all the necessary information ensuring I was as prepared as possible. The highly skilled and competent Sherpa team ensured our comfort and safety both during the trek in and on the mountain. Basecamp was made as comfortable as possible with individual tents, a mess tent and hardworking kitchen staff who exceeded all expectations by providing the most delicious and nutritious meals.

The Sherpa support was second to none. Lead Sherpa Paljor managed the logistics meticulously and went to great lengths to ensure I was as well prepared as possible for the summit push, including lending me his glove liners! He ensured my safety throughout and had his finger on the pulse at all times from base camp. I undoubtedly owe my summit success to Saila Tamang and Chewang Sherpa. As well as being incredibly kind, patient and attentive they are highly competent and skilled mountaineers whose judgement I trust implicitly. I felt safe on the mountain despite its hostility and objective dangers. I feel incredibly fortunate to have achieved the summit and it was a huge privilege to do so with such a proficient team who have taught me countless mountain skills to take forward to future expeditions.

Thank you team NAMAS for helping create memories of a lifetime

    2024 Baruntse 7129M Expedition

    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • Excellent organisation by Bisesh and the Namas team. The sherpas were A+ in terms of attitude and helpfulness.

  • Baruntse is a stunning 7129-meter (23,389 ft) peak located in the eastern Himalayas of Nepal, within the Makalu-Barun National Park. It lies between Mount Everest and Makalu, forming part of the Khumbu region, and is surrounded by other iconic peaks like Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and Mera Peak.

Baruntse is often approached via Mera La Pass and the Hunku Valley, offering a remote and wild expedition route. Its relatively straightforward climbing route, combined with high altitude, glacier travel, and exposure, makes it a popular 7000-meter peak for mountaineers preparing for 8000ers like Everest or Makalu.

  • The best time to climb Baruntse is:

    • Autumn (Late Sept–Nov): Clear skies, stable weather, and safe climbing conditions. Most recommended.

    • Spring (Late April– May): Warmer temperatures and ideal for those preparing for Everest or other 8000ers. This is when the window opens for Everest and Makalu summits too.

Avoid monsoon (June–Aug) and winter (Dec–Feb) due to poor weather and high avalanche risk.

  • We climb Baruntse (7129M) via the southeast ridge, which is considered the standard and most reliable route. While the mountain looks imposing, the only technical sections are at West col a 100M 45degree climb and above 6900M climbing the exposed ridge leading to the summit of Baruntse. This is one of the intermediate 7000M climbing peak with relatively less objective dangers of avalanches.

Our rope-fixing team will set fixed lines all the way to the summit for maximum safety. The expedition uses Camp 1 and Camp 2 with a well-planned acclimatization and climbing strategy to ensure a safe and successful ascent.

  • Baruntse is considered a semi-technical 7000M peak, making it ideal for climbers with previous 6000M experience. The climb includes steep snow and ice slopes, especially past 6900M, but with fixed ropes and Sherpa support, it is manageable for well-prepared climbers.

Proper acclimatization, prior high-altitude experience, and good fitness are essential.

  • Summit day on Baruntse begins early in the morning with a steady, straightforward climb along a narrow snow and ice ridge. The route is fully fixed with ropes for safety. Depending on conditions, climbers typically return to Camp 2 or Camp 1 the same day after summiting.

  • Baruntse has a high summit success rate compared to other 7000M peaks in Nepal, especially when climbed in the autumn season. At Namas Adventure, we’ve successfully summited Baruntse in 2022 and 2024, maintaining a 100% safety record across our expeditions with no major incidents.

  • Yes, we’ve included 3 contingency days within the 10-day climbing period to account for weather delays or other unforeseen factors. In ideal conditions, the summit push from Base Camp and return can be completed in 3 days. However, the added buffer allows flexibility for a safe and successful summit attempt.

About the Mountain

Experiences - preprations

  • Baruntse is considered a less technical 7000M climb, but it still requires strong motivation and a solid foundation in mountaineering. • Yes, Baruntse requires solid technical skills. You should be comfortable climbing on steep rock and ice using crampons, ice axe, fixed ropes, and jumars. Although fixed lines are in place to assist, prior experience on technical alpine routes is essential for safety and success.

If you need guidance on developing these skills, please contact us for advice and training recommendations.

  • To prepare for Baruntse, focus on building endurance, strength, and technical climbing skills, including ice axe and crampon use, rope techniques, and high-altitude acclimatization.
