Mountaineering Gear List

For Himalayan Peaks from 6,500m to 7,000m+

This gear list has been carefully compiled by our team and climbing Sherpa expedition leaders. Please do not cut corners on gear quality. The equipment below is recommended for mountaineering expeditions on Himalayan peaks from 6,500m to 7,000m+.

Technical Climbing Gear

Helmet (Black Diamond, Petzl, or equivalent)

Alpine ice axe, 65–70 cm 

Mountaineering harness with adjustable leg loops

Carabiners: minimum 4 locking and 4 non-locking

Rappel device: ATC or figure 8

Ascender or jumar

Crampons, 10–12 point

Footwear

Mountaineering boots suitable for 7,000m to 8,000m peaks (La Sportiva, Scarpa, or equivalent)

☐ Hiking boots or trekking shoes with ankle support for the approach to base camp

☐ Thermal mountaineering socks: 4–6 pairs

☐ Liner socks: 8 pairs

Clothing Layers

Base Layers

☐ Merino or equivalent base layers: 4 top and bottom sets

☐ Long johns or equivalent thermal bottoms (Rab Polartec or equivalent): 2 pairs

Mid Layers

☐ Breathable mid-layer tops: 5

Legwear

☐ Lightweight nylon pants: 2 pairs

☐ Soft shell guide pants, breathable and weather-resistant

☐ Hard shell pants, waterproof and breathable, sized to fit over other layers

☐ Insulated synthetic pants, primarily for climbing below Camp 2

Outer Layers

☐ Hooded soft shell jacket - Mid layer

☐ Hooded hard shell jacket, waterproof and breathable

Insulated down jacket with hood (Mountain Hardwear Alpine down or equivalent)

Expedition Down suit 

Headwear and Eye Protection

☐ Wool hat or ski hat

☐ Sun hat for the protection of the face and neck

☐ Buff or neck gaiter

☐ Glacier glasses with full side protection or wraparound coverage (a backup pair is recommended)

☐ Ski goggles for summit day and high winds

Gloves and Hand Protection

☐ Lightweight synthetic liner gloves: 2 pairs

☐ Soft shell gloves for moderate cold and wind

☐ Shell gloves with insulated liners for severe cold and strong wind

☐ Expedition mitts for extreme weather

Packs and Sleeping Equipment

☐ Expedition backpack, 65 - 90L

☐ Trekking backpack, 25–30L for approach and hiking days

Sleeping bag rated to at least -30°F / -30°C to -40F or -40C

☐ High-quality full-length sleeping pad for base camp and high camps

☐ Closed-cell foam pad for extra warmth and comfort

Trekking and Camp Equipment

☐ Trekking poles with snow baskets, adjustable

☐ Plastic-insulated cup

☐ Plastic bowl

☐ Spoon

☐ Head torch (at least 700 lumens) x 2

☐ Sunscreen SPF 50+

☐ Lip balm with sunblock

☐ Water bottles: 2 wide-mouth bottles, 1 litre each

☐ Insulated water bottle covers: 2

☐ Thermos flask, 1 litre: 2 

☐ Pee bottle, minimum 1 litre

☐ Toiletry bag including toilet paper, hand sanitiser, and a small towel

☐ Hand warmers and toe warmers

☐ Pen knife or multi-tool (optional)

Electronics and Personal Items

☐ Camera with extra batteries and memory cards

☐ Personal solar charging system (optional but recommended)

☐ Travel clothes

☐ Duffel bags: 2, with locks

☐ Base camp comfort items such as Kindle, iPad, smartphone, etc.

Food and Personal Health

☐ Personal snack food for climbing days, such as bars, gels, nuts, jerky, and other preferred snacks

☐ Small personal first aid kit including athletic tape, bandages, ibuprofen, blister care, and personal medications

Electronics and Personal Items

☐ Camera with extra batteries and memory cards
